What Happens to Your Scrap Car
Every vehicle we collect in Dunedin is processed responsibly:
- Fluid removal: Engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, and refrigerant are drained and disposed of according to NZ EPA requirements
- Battery removal: Lead-acid batteries are recycled through approved NZ channels
- Parts assessment: Usable parts are catalogued and sold into the NZ used-parts market, reducing waste and keeping parts affordable for NZ owners
- Body processing: The remaining shell is shredded and sorted — steel, aluminium, and copper are separated and recycled
- NZTA deregistration: The vehicle is formally removed from the NZ Motor Vehicle Register on collection day
Why Our Scrap Prices Beat Dunedin Scrap Yards
Standard scrap yards in Dunedin pay approximately $100–$200 for a typical passenger car — based purely on steel weight at approximately $120–$150 per tonne.
We calculate parts value on top of scrap metal value. For a 2010 Toyota Corolla, for example, the engine, transmission, panels, lights, and interior components combined can be worth $400–$1,200 more than the raw scrap weight — and we pass that value on to you.
Dunedin-Specific Scrap Pricing Factors
Dunedin's geography and demographics create specific demand patterns that affect scrap car prices:
- Subaru AWD components — higher demand in Dunedin than any other NZ city
- Student cars — Honda Jazz, Mazda Demio high volumes from Otago University
- Farm utes — HiLux and Navara parts premium from Otago agricultural sector
