Is It Legal to Sell a Car Without WOF or Rego in NZ?

Yes — completely. New Zealand law does not require a vehicle to have a current WOF or registration to be sold. The only requirement is that ownership is correctly transferred using the NZTA MR13 (disposal) form. We complete this on site at every Dunedin collection.

WOF or Rego Status Has Zero Impact on Our Offer

We assess your vehicle's value based on its make, model, year, condition, and current market demand — not its compliance status. A 2015 Toyota Corolla with no WOF is worth the same to us as one with a current WOF. The compliance documents are irrelevant to our assessment.

Unused Registration Refund

If your vehicle has current NZ registration at the time of sale, you may be entitled to a refund of unused registration from NZTA. We advise on this at every collection:

  • NZTA calculates refunds based on full months of unused registration remaining
  • Refunds are processed by NZTA within 2–4 weeks
  • We provide all information needed to claim your refund

What We Accept

  • Vehicles with expired WOF — any period, including years-expired
  • Vehicles with expired or cancelled registration
  • LTNZ write-offs — both category A and category B
  • Vehicles with outstanding parking fines (note: fines remain your responsibility)
  • Inherited or abandoned vehicles (with proof of ownership)

NZTA Paperwork on Site

We complete all required NZTA documentation on site at every collection — at no charge. The vehicle is removed from your name on the day of collection. You receive a copy of all documentation for your records.
